Module 1 Learning Objectives

Section 1  Federal Employment Tax and Employer Liability - When you have completed this section, you should have a good working knowledge of:

  • When, how and how much Federal tax to withhold from an employee’s paycheck
  • What the employer’s obligation is related to Social Security and Medicare tax withholding
  • When, how, and how much Social Security and Medicare tax to withhold from an employee’s paycheck
  • Documentation required to pay and report federal withholding tax, Social Security and Medicare withholding
  • What is Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA)
  • How much FUTA you must pay as an employer
  • How to report FUTA Tax payments
  • Completing and filing the necessary documents in order to be recognized as an employer by the federal government (IRS)

Sections 2 – 4 State Employment Tax and Employer Liability - When you have completed these sections, you should have a good working knowledge of:

  • Completing and filing the necessary documents in order to be recognized as an employer by the state of Kansas
  • When, how and how much State Tax to withhold from an employee’s paycheck
  • Documentation required to pay and report state withholding tax
  • Determining if you are obligated to pay state unemployment tax
  • Forms and timelines required by the state of Kansas Department of Labor
  • How much state unemployment tax you are required to pay
  • How to report state unemployment tax payments
  • What workers compensation is, and how it affect employers and employees
  • How to elect to cover employees when the employer is not obligated by state law to maintain workers compensation insurance.
